"MARILYN"

"MARILYN"

Last night I drove by a house
In the pouring rain
And just like all the other nights
It struck me once again:
That the lady who once lived there
Doesn't do so anymore
But I could just imagine her
Walking through the door.

The red house beside the road
Has frilly curtains still
A blue truck's parked outside
And probably always will;
One day she's making biscuits
To take to her church
The next she met her Maker
And oh, how it still hurts.

The moon and stars shine brightly
On the silent, dark, red house
I can see her clothesline
With her pretty nylon blouse;
She had no way of knowing
Her life was over now
She was home all alone
When she took her final bow.

The red house by the road
Still stands alone and proud
But no-one tends the daffodils
Growing in her yard;
She used to laugh right out loud
So trim and fit and tanned
She loved her life and nature
Always lent a helping hand.

When the funeral was in place
And she was the shining star
God must have been smiling
When he carried her afar;
The hymn we heard that day
Helped fill an empty hole
So beautifully it was sung:
"All is well, all is well, with my soul."

Last night I drove by a red house
And saw a light inside
But it was just a moonbeam
Still, it made me want to cry;
A house is not a home
When no love is left inside
It's just another house now
Since Marilyn Pettit died.
