YODELING COWBOY

I heard he was our cousin
Guess he might have been
Daddy first told me that
When I was almost ten;
"Wilf Carter's your cousin"
But I'd not heard him sing
So Daddy turned the radio on
And I heard "Montana Slim".

Born down in Guysboro
1904, I'm told
His daddy was a Minister
Baptist, loud & bold;
At 8 years old he went to work
At 12, he ran away
Returned until he was 16
But he just could not stay.

At first he was a Hobo
Then he worked for CPR
He said he loved the railways
But had to catch a star;
Adept at breaking horses
Self-taught on his guitar
He rodeo'd and yodeled
Places near and far.

One of nine children
He never did look back
Sang once on the Opry
That's a proven fact;
He was the Yodeling Cowboy
Nova Scotia's own
"When It's Springtime In the Rockies"
He still missed his home.


In 1940, I have read
He had a car accident
Home-bound for 9 years
When time slowly went;
But he wrote & toured again
He died at aged 91
After he'd made millions
And his yodeling was done.
