THE LIGHTS OF THE CITY

THE LIGHTS OF THE CITY

Everywhere he looks these days
He sees his own reflection
In the shining windows
Polished to perfection;
Inside the glass are shoppers
Everyone's so busy
Sometimes he gets dizzy from
The lights of the city.

Rich folks flashing money
Dressed in diamonds and furs
Hookers flashing fishnet hose
Wannabee cowboys in their spurs;
People all in a hurry
To get nowhere fast
Welcoming the future
To Hell with the past.

The lights of Las Vegas
Brighten up his bed
Wherever he can find a spot
To rest his weary head;
Some drop him a quarter
Some give him a kick
But he just sits quietly
Because he is so sick.

Once he had money too
A house and all of that
But when she left he gave up
And never did look back;
The illness he can live with
He does not want their pity
But often he can do without
The lights of the city.

She saw him downtown one day
As she was walking by
He was soundly sleeping
It almost made her cry;
But she just left some money
And when he awoke
He saw five thousand dollars
No longer was he broke.

The lights of the city
Seemed brighter now at last
And he went back to school
Tried to forget the past;
He met a nice lady
Drove a Ford Ranger
And often asked himself
Who WAS that special Angel?
