OUT IN THE BARN

OUT IN THE BARN

As a small child I used to hide
Behind my mothers long skirts
And as a child often will do
I recited old, familiar verse;
"Hiawatha" was much too long
"Casey At the Bat" was too
But out in the barn, alone in the hay
I made up my dreams of you.

The hard, bitter rain would fall
Onto the tin, fragile ol' roof
The shadows hid my small frame
And my blossoming youth;
I made believe you were there
Out in the barn, close by
And as I laid in your arms
I almost could see your eyes.

Out in the barn, all alone
I'd play and pretend sometimes
That you would listen to me
Reciting all of my rhymes;
But I grew up and realized
Dreams seldom come true
So I'll go out in the barn
To try to remember you.

Perhaps I'll find you waiting
Ready to hold me tight
Perhaps you'll be everything
I need to make things right;
I lay in the fragrant hay
Though your face I cannot see
Out in the barn, my eyes
Cry for what cannot be.
